Kalchedon, a Greek colony founded on the eastern Bosporus in the 7th century BC, prospered through Black Sea trade, especially grain exports, despite competition from Byzantion. Under Persian control during the Classical period, it retained enough autonomy to mint coinage. The decline of Persian power and rise of Macedon reshaped its political position, while Alexander’s conquests integrated the city into wider Hellenistic trade networks.
