Chamba Sculpture
Taraba State, Nigeria
Wood, dark patina
Incl stand
The upright figure derives its power from the consistent elongation of the human body. Strong, slightly bent legs support a slender, almost column-like torso; the long arms lie close to the sides and end in sparsely suggested hands. The small head is particularly striking: above the long neck sits a domed skull with asymmetrical eyes and an extremely elongated, beak-like nose. Deep negative spaces between the neck, arms, and body lend the heavy mass of wood a surprising lightness. The reddish-brown, in places glossy, patina and traces of abrasion underscore the sculptural unity of the work.
The Chamba people live on both sides of the border between Nigeria and Cameroon; in Nigeria, communities are concentrated particularly in present-day Taraba State. Her sculpture belongs to the diverse art complex of the central Benue region and is closely linked to neighboring Mumuye, Jukun, and Vere traditions. Chamba figures range from strictly columnar to distinctly volumetric forms; their functions were equally varied. Documented examples served as ritual intermediaries and could be placed in pairs in sacred groves to ward off misfortune and invoke spiritual forces.
The striking posture of the present work makes the figure appear poised between stillness and movement.
Literature (selection):
Richard Fardon / Christine Stelzig: Column to Volume: Formal Innovation in Chamba Statuary. London 2005.
Marla C. Berns / Richard Fardon / Sidney Littlefield Kasfir (eds.): Central Nigeria Unmasked: Arts of the Benue River Valley. Los Angeles 2011.
Some of the information is generated by artificial intelligence and is based on published sources from the fields of ethnography, archaeology, and art history.
