A particularly attractive old stone celt from the north coast of West Papua, originating from the area near the village of Ormu, not far from Jayapura.

Stone celts of this type have a long history in the cultures of the north coast of West Papua. Although objects of this form ultimately developed from functional stone axes and adzes, particularly fine examples acquired a value that went far beyond their practical use. They became objects of prestige and wealth and could be preserved within families for generations.

Such objects could remain important long after metal tools had replaced stone implements for everyday work.

This example comes from the Ormu area on the north coast of West Papua, a region with longstanding traditions of exchange between coastal communities and communities of the interior. Objects of value circulated through these networks and could acquire considerable social importance.
