Vintage Japanese “Diafurajin” Ointment Enamel Sign – Showa Era

A fascinating vintage Japanese enamel advertising sign for “Diafurajin Ointment” (ダイアフラジン軟膏), produced by Shiga Prefectural Pharmaceutical (滋賀縣製薬).


The design is unmistakably Showa-era Japanese. The product name is written vertically in enormous red katakana characters, while the slogan appears beside it in smaller black lettering. Against the clean white enamel background, the limited palette of red, black and white creates an advertisement that could be recognized instantly from a distance.

Signs like this were once displayed outside pharmacies and local shops throughout Japan. Before television and modern advertising became dominant, enamel signs were an effective way for pharmaceutical companies to make their products familiar to ordinary households. Their hard, weather-resistant surfaces allowed them to remain outdoors for many years.

Today, these once-common advertisements have become tangible records of a disappearing Japanese streetscape.

The narrow vertical proportions of this example are especially attractive, while the slight discoloration, enamel wear and traces of rust accumulated over time give it the authentic character that modern reproductions cannot recreate.
