Kono Michisei (1895-1950)
Petr Kono Michisei. A painter and printmaker who was active from the Taisho period to the pre-war Showa period. His vast body of work spans a wide range of genres, including landscapes, portraits (including self-portraits), copperplate engravings, woodblock prints, illustrations for novels, book designs, landscape paintings, and Nanga paintings. His style also evolved in various ways depending on the subject matter and period, and he also worked on stage design. Among his representative works are numerous copperplate engravings depicting the Great Kanto Earthquake. His father, Kono Jiro (a samurai of the Ashikaga Domain in Shimotsuke Province, formerly Sugimoto, holy name: Alexei), was a Western-style painter who served as an art teacher at Nagano Normal School and dedicated himself to the popularization and education of Western painting under the tutelage of Takahashi Yuichi. He was also a devout Orthodox Christian who later became a photographer. Michisei was also baptized into the Orthodox Church at the age of nine. "Petr" is the holy name he received at that time. For this reason, many of his works are based on Christianity and Orthodoxy. His relationships with contemporaries, such as his interactions with Saneatsu Mushanokoji of the Shirakaba School and his participation in the Sōdosha, led by Ryūsei Kishida, are also noteworthy.
