竹状珊瑚是真正的珊瑚。它属于刺胞动物门，其中还包括脑珊瑚和鹿角珊瑚。红色和粉色珊瑚产生的方解石骨骼硬度接近象牙和珍珠的硬度。Bamboo coral (Isididae family) 与 red coral (通常为 Corallium rubrum) 在颜色和稀有程度上有显著差异。红珊瑚来自地中海的深红色珍品材料，而竹状珊瑚通常自然呈白色/灰色，经染成红色，作为更丰富、价格更亲民的替代品。
