DESCRIPTION:
Stunning massive gem grade phytosaur tooth from the Chinle Formation in Navajo County, Arizona, is a Late Triassic reptile. These teeth typically feature sharp serrations, and belong to large, crocodile-like aquatic predators.
Fossil Features and ContextAge: Late Triassic period.
Location: Navajo County, Arizona (within the extensive Chinle Formation rock layer).
Creature: Phytosaurs were large, meat-eating reptiles that looked like modern crocodiles but evolved separately.
Size: Common teeth measure about 1 to 1.5 inches, though rare specimens can exceed 2 inches and may belong to large genera like Smilosuchus.
Identification: Specimens feature curved, conical shapes with fine serrated edges (carinae) along the sides, adapted for holding slippery prey in ancient river and swamp ecosystems. Opinions are mixed when identifying isolated fragments, as wear can make it hard to tell sharp ridges apart from true serrations.
