In the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark he is simply called Thaddaeus, while in the Gospel of Luke and in the Acts of the Apostles he is called Judas the son of James, although the identification of “Thaddaeus” with “Judas the son of James” is traditional and has been debated by scholars. In all cases, there seems to be a tendency to accompany the name “Judas” with some specification, perhaps due to the writers’ concern to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, the apostle to whom the betrayal of Jesus is attributed.
