Mineral Wave — Where Matter Becomes Landscape

In Mineral Wave, Samia Kerkeni transforms fluid acrylic and sculptural texture into an imagined geological landscape, suspended somewhere between crystallised stone, flowing water and mineral formations.

A luminous foundation of pearl grey and silvery tones is crossed by vertical currents of lavender, deep plum, white and black, illuminated by unexpected passages of warm golden and copper accents.

The composition seems to move simultaneously upward and downward.

It can evoke a crystallised waterfall, a fractured geological wall, mineral veins hidden beneath the earth, or the memory of water permanently captured inside stone.

Yet the work deliberately avoids a fixed interpretation.

The closer the viewer comes, the more the landscape disappears and matter itself takes over.

Pouring Meets 3D Sculptural Relief

The physical surface is central to Mineral Wave.

Kerkeni combines controlled acrylic pouring with textured gel worked individually by hand. Cells, ridges, deposits and irregular material formations emerge throughout the composition, with relief reaching approximately 5 mm in selected areas.

These elements give the painting a genuine tactile dimension.

Under natural daylight, the pearl and silver passages appear soft and mineral.
Under directional or evening lighting, the raised textures produce delicate micro-shadows while the warmer pigments become increasingly visible.

The artwork therefore changes subtly according to light, viewing angle and distance.

From across a room, Mineral Wave appears balanced and almost atmospheric.
At close range, it reveals the complexity of its creation: accumulated layers, fluid reactions, sculptural deposits and traces of the artist's hand.

About Samia Kerkeni

Born in 1980, Samia Kerkeni is a contemporary artist whose practice is centred on the research of matter, colour, texture and movement.

A doctor and researcher in her professional field, she brings a spirit of observation, experimentation and continuous investigation into her artistic practice.

Her work explores the behaviour of fluid materials and pigments — how they meet, separate, accumulate and transform across the surface.

Pouring is not treated simply as a decorative process, but as an artistic language.

Through controlled fluidity and deliberate intervention, Kerkeni searches for a balance between what the artist can direct and what matter itself is allowed to create.

Her inspiration frequently comes from natural forces: oceans, geological formations, invisible currents, erosion, mineral structures and the continuous transformation of matter.

In her more textural compositions, including Mineral Wave, this research extends into three dimensions, allowing relief, light and shadow to become active components of the artwork.

Her works are presented internationally through Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, specialising in contemporary abstraction and textural art.
