Histiaia was a major polis of northern Euboea, commanding a fertile plain and sea routes toward Thessaly. During the Euboean revolt of 446 BC, it was subdued by Pericles, its inhabitants expelled and Athenians settled at Oreos. Later restored, Histiaia became especially renowned for its prolific silver coinage, often depicting the nymph Histiaia seated on a ship’s stern.
