Mithradates VI of Pontos (120–63 BC), known as Mithradates the Great, expanded his kingdom across Anatolia and the Black Sea and opposed Roman dominance. He launched the Mithradatic Wars and orchestrated the Asiatic Vespers, but was ultimately defeated by Pompey. Betrayed by his son, he died after poison failed to kill him, reportedly due to years of self-experimentation. He is also remembered for developing the antidote mithridatium.
