Elegant six-piece set of yellow uranium glass Porto glasses in Art Deco style, produced by Verreries Doyen in Havré, Belgium, circa the 1930s. The set captivates with the contrast between the slightly greenish transparency of the bowls and the brilliant yellow-green hue of their feet, as well as the refined sobriety of their proportions. Fully mold-free manufacturing gives each glass its own personality, making this ensemble a remarkable illustration of glassmaking still deeply artisanal in the interwar period.

The six glasses feature a bowl that is broadly rounded, almost hemispherical, with walls slightly flared toward a circular rub, and a delicately thinned rim. The lower part of the bowl extends into a transition crafted with several superimposed rings, before joining a long straight and slender stem in yellow uranium glass. This rests on a wide circular foot, finely luted, giving each piece a silhouette that is both light and perfectly balanced. Subtle variations in height, diameter, thickness, and shaping are perceptible from one glass to another: none of the six are exactly identical, a trait directly linked to their mold-free production and the glassmaker’s manual work. The feet also react very strongly to ultraviolet rays at 395 nm, revealing an intense green fluorescence characteristic of uranium glass.

The set is in very good condition. The bowls remain perfectly transparent and the feet have retained their beautiful yellow-green coloration as well as their spectacular fluorescence. Some very slight irregularities or small old defects are visible at the rim on certain pieces; these have been carefully polished and therefore do not correspond to post-manufacture incidents. A few discreet signs of use can also be observed, without compromising the integrity or elegance of the set.

Founded around 1906 in Havré-Ville by Jean-Baptiste Doyen, Verreries Doyen developed significant production of hollow glass and art glass, particularly during the interwar period. In 1930, the factory had several furnaces and nearly 400 workers, with production covering different categories of decorative glassware. These Porto glasses sit squarely within this period, when Verreries Doyen paired Art Deco aesthetics with the possibilities offered by manual glasswork, notably through the use of ouraline.
