Massive silver chalice with vermeil – A.E. Jones – Birmingham, 1940

Chalice in solid sterling silver English Sterling 925/1000, made by the silversmith Albert Edward Jones (A.E. Jones), a renowned figure of British silversmithing from the Arts & Crafts movement.

The chalice presents a sober and balanced line: wide outward-flaring cup with gilded interior (vermeil), resting on a knotted flattened stem and a broad circular slightly domed foot. A finely engraved cross on the foot emphasizes its liturgical purpose.

The reverse of the foot bears a series of perfectly legible British hallmarks: A.E.J: Master mark of Albert Edward Jones

Lion passant: sterling silver with fineness of 925/1000
