Exceptionnel original brevet d’Officier de l’Ordre royal du Cambodge, décerné au nom de Somdach Préa Norodom, roi du Cambodge, à M. Guy Mac-Guckin de Slane, lieutenant de vaisseau, pour les services rendus au Royaume du Cambodge.
Le brevet précise que le titulaire est nommé Officier de l'Ordre, avec prise de rang à compter du 26 octobre 1894.
Il s'agit d'un document historique original datant de la période du Protectorat français du Cambodge, et particulièrement intéressant car il est antérieur à la transformation de l'Ordre royal du Cambodge en ordre colonial français en 1896.
Une remarquable composition lithographique
Le brevet est présenté dans une très belle composition lithographique en couleurs, richement décorée de motifs et figures de tradition khmère.

Le récipiendaire
Guy Mac-Guckin de Slane était un officier de la Marine française.
Il fut promu lieutenant de vaisseau le 27 janvier 1894 et servait alors dans la Division navale française d'Extrême-Orient, notamment à bord du croiseur Forfait.
Le Forfait faisait partie du dispositif naval français en Extrême-Orient au moment des événements franco-siamois de 1893, contexte important des relations entre la France, le Siam et le Cambodge.
Le présent brevet constitue ainsi un témoignage nominatif particulièrement intéressant de la présence française en Indochine et des relations entre la monarchie cambodgienne et les autorités françaises à la fin du XIXe siècle.
Contexte historique
L'Ordre royal du Cambodge fut créé par Norodom Ier en 1864. Durant cette période, le souverain cambodgien pouvait conférer directement son ordre pour récompenser des services rendus au Royaume.
En 1896, l'ordre fut intégré au système français des distinctions coloniales et devint officiellement l'Ordre du Cambodge.
Ce brevet, daté de 1894, appartient donc à la période antérieure à cette transformation et témoigne encore directement de l'autorité honorifique du roi Norodom.

Exceptional original diploma appointing an Officer of the Royal Order of Cambodia, issued in the name of Somdach Préa Norodom, King of Cambodia, to Mr. Guy Mac-Guckin de Slane, Lieutenant de Vaisseau (French Navy Lieutenant), in recognition of services rendered to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The diploma states that he was appointed Officer of the Order, with seniority dating from 26 October 1894.
This is an original historical document from the period of the French Protectorate of Cambodia. It is particularly interesting because it predates the transformation of the Royal Order of Cambodia into a French colonial order in 1896.
A remarkable lithographic composition
The diploma is presented as a beautiful coloured lithographic composition, richly decorated with traditional Khmer motifs and figures.
It includes symbolic figures, elephants and Khmer decorative elements, together with a coloured representation of the Officer's insignia in the centre of the document.

The recipient
Guy Mac-Guckin de Slane was an officer of the French Navy.
He was promoted to Lieutenant de Vaisseau on 27 January 1894 and was serving with the French Naval Division in the Far East, including service aboard the cruiser Forfait.
The Forfait formed part of the French naval presence in the Far East during the period of the Franco-Siamese events of 1893, an important context in the relations between France, Siam and Cambodia.
This diploma therefore provides a particularly interesting named historical record of the French presence in Indochina and of the relationship between the Cambodian monarchy and French authorities at the end of the 19th century.

The Royal Order of Cambodia was established by King Norodom I in 1864. During this period, the Cambodian sovereign could directly confer the order in recognition of services rendered to the Kingdom.
