Description
Japanese Blue and White Double-Gourd Vase with Sages – Aoki Mokubei Style – 1868–1926
An attractive Japanese blue-and-white ceramic vase of double-gourd form, decorated by hand with expressive figures of sages or scholars.
The decoration is executed in underglaze blue with freely drawn, lively brushwork. Groups of figures encircle both the upper and lower sections of the vase, giving the piece a strong decorative presence from every angle.
The surface displays fine natural craquelure, contributing to the aged character of the piece. The slightly irregular hand-painted decoration and variations in the cobalt-blue tones are characteristic features of its traditional appearance.
The base bears a blue “Mokubei” (聾米) mark associated with the celebrated style of Aoki Mokubei (1767–1833).
This vase is not offered as an original work by Aoki Mokubei. It is presented as a later Japanese work made in the style or tradition associated with Mokubei and bearing a Mokubei mark. Such later works reflect the lasting influence of Mokubei's ceramic designs on Japanese pottery.
Nevertheless, the vase itself is of considerable age and has been carefully preserved in Japan over the years. Its age, traditional craftsmanship, distinctive decoration and well-preserved condition give the piece its own historical and decorative value, independent of its attribution to Aoki Mokubei.
Estimated period: 1868–1926 (Meiji–Taishō period)
Dimensions
Height: approx. 25 cm
Maximum width: approx. 12.7 cm
Mouth diameter: approx. 1.7 cm
Weight: approx. 976 g
Condition
Good antique condition with signs of age and use. Fine craquelure is visible throughout the glazed surface, together with minor kiln marks, small spots, irregularities and age-related wear.
No major cracks or large chips have been observed.
Please carefully examine all photographs, as they form an important part of the description and provide the best representation of the condition, decoration, mark and overall appearance of the vase.
A distinctive Japanese blue-and-white decorative vase combining an elegant double-gourd form with an expressive traditional sage/scholar motif.
