Kyoto Kiyomizu-yaki (京焼・清水焼) Celadon Vase by Yamazaki Koyo

This celadon-glazed (青磁釉) vase was crafted by Nitten exhibition artist (日展作家) Yamazaki Koyo at the Koyo-gama (光洋窯) kiln in Kyoto, within the Kyoto Kiyomizu-yaki tradition. A deep, luminous green glaze flows in a striking gradation from top to bottom, shifting in tone depending on the angle of light. The entire surface is covered in fine ice-crackle crazing (氷裂貫入), a delicate network of cracks resembling shattered ice, giving each viewing angle a captivating, one-of-a-kind quality. The rounded body tapers gently to the mouth, and the generous 28 cm height makes the piece equally striking as a flower vase or as a standalone display object. The piece comes from an old Kyoto family estate. The base bears a pottery mark (陶印).

Artist Profile
Yamazaki Koyo (real name Yamazaki Akira; art name/go 光洋) was the master ceramicist who led Koyo-gama (光洋窯), a Kyoto kiln dedicated to the traditions of Kyo-yaki (京焼) and Kiyomizu-yaki (清水焼). He exhibited at the Nitten (日展), one of Japan's most prestigious open competitions, and developed particular skill in the application of complex coloured glazes, including his signature deep green crackle-glaze work. His pieces are characterized by a harmonious balance between robust form and exquisite surface treatment, and his work is held in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Bern.
