Asmat 舞盾 – 西巴布亚,1970年代

Origin: Asmat, southwest West Papua, Indonesia
Date: 1970s
Material: Wood, natural pigments
Object type: Ceremonial dance shield

An impressive Asmat dance shield, dating from the 1970s. These relatively lightweight shields were created to be carried during ceremonial dances and festivities and should be distinguished from the heavier traditional war shields (jamasj).

The shield is carved from a single piece of wood and decorated in the characteristic Asmat sculptural tradition. The bold relief carving and painted surface were intended to create a strong visual effect when the shield was carried and moved during dancing.

Asmat carving is closely connected with the ancestral world. Motifs appearing on shields and other ceremonial objects can refer to ancestors, human figures, animals and elements of the surrounding natural environment. Rather than being purely decorative, such imagery traditionally formed part of the wider Asmat system of identity, ancestry and ceremonial life.

Dance shields became particularly prominent during the second half of the 20th century, when traditional carving continued while warfare was increasingly suppressed. They provide an interesting example of how Asmat shield-making and carving traditions adapted to changing circumstances while retaining their distinctive visual language.

This example dates from the 1970s and has an attractive aged surface with signs of handling and use consistent with its age.

A highly decorative and increasingly collectable example of Asmat ceremonial art from West Papua, combining strong sculptural presence with an important tradition of shield carving.

Period: 1970s
Condition: Good condition for its age, with expected traces of use, handling and age. Please study the photographs carefully for the overall condition.
