Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390-1441) was a kunstschilder uit het graafschap Loon, dat vanaf 1366 onder het prinsbisdom Luik viel. Men rekent hem naast Rogier van der Weyden tot de voornaamste vertegenwoordiger van de Vlaamse Primitieven. Tot zijn bekendste werk hoort het panelengeheel het Lam Gods (1432), te bezichtigen in de Sint-Baafskathedraal van Gent. Hubert was zijn broer. Gepoogd wordt in dit boek de persoonlijkheid van Hubert en Jan te onderscheiden en alzo de mystificatie rond hun persoon en werken te humaniseren.
