与日本刀不同，马刀的设计并非以切削为主，而是以骑乘时用力击打、击退对手为目的。因此，刀身不像日本刀那样锋利。它比日本刀明显更重，具备在撞击硬甲时不易折断的韧性。

在日本，1868年的明治维新之后，为加强军事能力而引入西式武器装备。随之而来的是军事用剑的概念，并于1886年开发出独具日本风格的剑型军事剑，在刀身上融合了剑道式的刀法与刀身的日式传统。

former Imperial Japanese Army所使用的马刀，通常被称为“ Army Officer Sword（陆军军官剑）”。这是日本陆军官官兵所携带的标准化军用剑，设计受到日本传统剑道文化的影响。军官用弯刃，刀身上有复杂花纹、装饰性柄。此类军事剑被用于礼仪与正式场合，作为军官制服的一部分。
