The quiet one. Some watches announce themselves. This one doesn’t.
A silvered champagne dial, twelve applied gold batons, two slim hands — and nothing else. No seconds hand, no sub-dial, no date window, no text beyond the name and the words that matter: Girard-Perregaux. Swiss Made. Everything that could have been added was left off, and what remains has to be right. It is.
Turn it under a lamp and the dial does the only thing it was designed to do: the fine radial finish lifts, the applied indexes throw a thin line of light, and the whole face shifts from cream to warm gold and back. Photographs catch about half of it.

What’s inside
Take the case back off and the watch stops being anonymous. The bridges are gilt and finished, signed by engraving: Girard-Perregaux, 17 Jewels, Swiss, no. 2329769. This is the manufacture’s own movement in the manufacture’s own case — the name on the dial and the name on the plate are the same name. With vintage Swiss watches that is not a given, and it is the first thing a serious buyer checks.
Girard-Perregaux has been making watches since 1791. The seal is struck inside the case back, where only a watchmaker would ever see it.

A watch that was looked after
Also inside the case back, in blue ink: 7/7/04, and a watchmaker’s initials. Someone opened this watch, serviced it, and wrote the date on the inside — the way it has been done for a century. A small thing, and it tells you the watch belonged to someone who took it seriously.

Honest about what it is
The case is gold plated over a stainless steel back — the interior stamp reads FOND ACIER INOXYDABLE, and there is no gold hallmark anywhere on the watch. It has been worn: the plating is thinned at the lug tips and along the case edges, with the base metal showing through in places, and the dial carries a few small light marks and a fine trace in the upper left area. All of it is in the photographs, photographed deliberately rather than hidden. This is a watch that was used, not one that sat in a drawer.
The strap is a later brown lizard-grain leather with a gold-tone buckle. Not original, and priced as such.

Who it’s for
At 32.5 mm this is a compact dress watch, cut to the proportions of its era. It is for someone who wants a real manufacture name on a dial quiet enough to wear under a cuff every day — and who would rather have an honest worn Girard-Perregaux than a polished-out one.

Silvered champagne dial with a fine radial finish, signed “Girard-Perregaux” below 12 o’clock and “SWISS MADE” at 6 o’clock. Applied gold-tone baton indexes at all twelve positions. Slim gold-tone baton hands for hours and minutes; no seconds hand, no sub-dial.

Manual winding, no rotor. Gilt plates and bridges, signed “Girard-Perregaux”, marked “17 JEWELS” and “SWISS”, movement number 2329769. Balance with index regulator.

Round, slim case with faceted lugs, fluted gold-tone crown and a domed crystal. Case back exterior stamped 76123429. Case back interior stamped “FOND ACIER INOXYDABLE” together with the Girard-Perregaux 1791 seal, plus a handwritten watchmaker’s service mark in blue ink dated 7/7/04.

Functioning
Fully operational. The watch winds, runs and keeps good time. It was recently checked and regulated by a watchmaker. No service documentation is supplied with the watch.

Condition
Very good for its age — fully working, with light and clearly localised wear.
The watch presents very well from the front: bezel and upper case surfaces clean and glossy, crystal free of visible scratches, applied indexes and hands intact. The dial shows a few small light marks and a fine trace in the upper left area.
The wear is concentrated where the watch sits against the wrist: the outer rim of the case back and the underside of the lug tips show thinning of the plating with the base metal visible in places, along with fine handling scratches on the steel back. None of it is visible when the watch is worn.
