Item Description
Takaoka Copperware – Twin-Handled Bronze Vase with Taotie Motif
This striking bronze vase from Takaoka is distinguished by its powerful Taotie motif and its beautifully nuanced deep green and black patina.
The upper body is decorated with Taotie (饕餮文), an ancient beast-mask motif originating from Chinese bronze vessels. The boldly modeled relief is complemented by ring handles on both sides, giving the vase a distinctive, classical presence.
One of the most appealing features is its richly expressive surface. Deep green and black tones blend in subtle layers, revealing different shades and textures as the light changes.
The intricate decoration of the upper section contrasts beautifully with the slender, restrained lower body, creating an elegant balance between strength and simplicity.
Takaoka Copperware (Takaoka Doki) is a renowned Japanese metalworking tradition with a history of approximately 400 years in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. It is particularly known for its refined casting, coloring, and finishing techniques.
Standing 25 cm tall, the vase is beautiful with flowers, but its sculptural form is equally compelling when displayed on its own. Simply placed in a room, it brings a quiet beauty and sense of presence to the space.
A maker’s mark is present on the base, but the artist has not been identified.
