Lot Description:An exceptional and highly rare ballistic brass Gunner’s Quadrant (artillery quadrant), entirely hand-engraved, dating back to the second half of the 17th century (c. 1650-1690). This extraordinary Renaissance/Baroque scientific instrument was used by master bombardiers to calculate gun elevation, barrel caliber, and ammunition proportions. A museum-quality piece, likely commissioned for a high-ranking artillery officer or military engineer.
Engravings and Geometric Scales: The quadrant is a masterpiece combining ballistic science and decorative period art:
Central Plate (Side A): Beautiful Late-Manierist/Baroque engraving featuring scrolling foliage and an anthropomorphic grotesque mask. The inner edges feature a proportional scale numbered 1 to 12 with fractions, serving as a conversion table for projectile weight based on material density (iron, lead, stone).
Central Plate (Side B): A refined, elegant engraving depicting the Caduceus of Mercury (the winged staff with entwined serpents, a classic symbol of geometry, astronomy, and intellect) flanked by floral motifs.The Long Rule (Muzzle Arm): Features an antique graduated scale ranging from 100 to over 300 units. This scale allowed the gunner to determine the gun’s caliber by inserting the rule directly into the muzzle. It does not match modern metric measurements, as it dates before the decimal system and reflects pre-19th-century local regional units (such as the Florentine/Venetian military foot).The Arc (Quadrant): Dual-reading scale.
