A DAT deck developed as part of the "New ES" series.
Its design adheres to the New ES series concept, featuring a unified aesthetic, a robust chassis structure, and off-center insulators that effectively suppress external vibrations.
It employs a 4-motor direct-drive (4D.D.) mechanism using independent motors for each function: the capstan (controlling tape transport), the supply and take-up reels (for fast-forward and rewind), and the head drum rotation (for signal reading).
By using dedicated motors for each task—eliminating the need for belt drives—the load on the motors is reduced, resulting in enhanced precision and stability in tape transport.
The A/D conversion section features a Pulse A/D converter with a built-in 1-bit modulator. It achieves a theoretical S/N ratio of 119 dB through high-speed, high-precision processing involving 64x oversampling and 5th-order noise shaping.
Additionally, the modulator—which handles analog signals—is physically separated from the decimation filter (used for digital processing to adjust the sampling rate); this independent configuration minimizes noise interference affecting the modulator.
It is equipped with an SBM (Super Bit Mapping) digital filter.
SBM shifts quantization noise—normally distributed evenly across the audible range—into the high-frequency range, where it is less perceptible to the human ear. It also utilizes noise-shaping principles to incorporate information from the lower 4 bits (normally discarded) into the upper 16 bits, thereby achieving significant noise reduction.
Furthermore, the SBM digital filter reduces aliasing noise within the internal decimation filter stage and converts the 24-bit data output from the decimation filter into 16-bit data while preserving virtually all the original information, ensuring high-quality recording.
The D/A conversion section employs an Advanced Pulse D/A converter, which utilizes Sony's proprietary high-precision calculation method to achieve high-density pulse output. The unit employs a single-chip IC featuring 4-D/A-converter output per channel (8-D/A-converter output for both channels combined) and utilizes complementary PLM operation—where two pulse-wave outputs with a complementary relationship are differentially combined—to reduce harmonic distortion.
It is equipped with subcode functionality, allowing for the recording and erasure of Start IDs.
Start IDs are subcodes that mark specific points, such as the beginning of a track. Two modes are available: "Auto," which automatically writes the ID at the start of a track, and "Manual," which allows the user to write the ID at a desired location (excluding the period immediately following a Start ID—9 seconds for SP mode and 18 seconds for LP mode).
A rehearsal function is included for manually writing Start IDs during playback.
During rehearsal, users can listen to the audio while shifting the marking point forward or backward in 0.3-second increments. The shift time is shown on the display, allowing for precise adjustment.
Existing Start IDs can also be modified while using the rehearsal function.
Program numbers can be assigned to Start IDs, enabling direct track selection by simply specifying the number during playback. Program numbers are assigned automatically during recording but can be reassigned using the "Renumber" function.
To correct program numbers that have become irregular due to the addition or deletion of Start IDs, the Renumber function allows for the automatic reassignment of numbers starting from the beginning of the tape with a single touch.
It supports SCMS (Serial Copy Management System), allowing for one generation of digital-to-digital recording using sources such as CDs as the master. Additionally, when using only analog input/output terminals, repeated recording is possible without SCMS restrictions.
For analog input recording, a new 44.1 kHz mode has been added alongside the conventional 48 kHz (standard) and 32 kHz (LP) modes, enabling recording at the same sampling rate as the CD format.
Digital fade-in and fade-out functions are included. Fade-in and fade-out times can be finely adjusted individually within a range of 1 to 15 seconds. Furthermore, as these functions link with the pause feature, they are highly useful when editing and recording from a DAT master tape onto a compact cassette. It features a digital peak margin display that shows—in decibels—how much headroom remains relative to the recording level. This allows for level adjustments that take full advantage of the unit's wide dynamic range.
It is equipped with a CD Q-code decoding function. This enables the decoding of Q-code data (track boundary information transmitted via the digital interface) when recording from a CD via digital input, allowing for the automatic writing of accurate start IDs.
