The Inspiration Behind the Title — The phrase 'Ride the Lightning' was inspired by Stephen King's novel 'The Stand'. Guitarist Kirk Hammett recalled reading the passage where a character on death row uses the phrase to describe execution by the electric chair.

Recording in Copenhagen — To record the album, Metallica traveled to Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark, the home country of drummer Lars Ulrich. They chose this studio because they admired the production work of Flemming Rasmussen, particularly on Rainbow's 'Difficult to Cure' album.
