Official Waterloo Medal – Limited Edition No. 542/1000 – Sterling Silver – Framed Presentation Set (1975)
An impressive official sterling silver presentation set featuring the celebrated Waterloo Medal, designed by the renowned Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci (1783–1855). This faithful full-size reproduction was issued in 1975 by The Waterloo Committee in collaboration with the Library of Imperial History to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo (1815–1975). Only 1,000 numbered examples of this edition were produced, making it a highly desirable collector's item for enthusiasts of numismatics, military history and British historical memorabilia.
The original Waterloo Medal was commissioned shortly after the Battle of Waterloo to celebrate the Allied victory over Napoleon. Pistrucci spent nearly thirty years engraving the monumental dies, but by the time the project was completed, almost all intended recipients had passed away and the medal was never officially struck for presentation. Today, it is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of medallic art.
This complete presentation set includes:
Official Limited Edition No. 542 of 1,000
Two sterling silver electrotype medal faces displaying both the obverse and reverse simultaneously
Original walnut display frame
Original brass identification plaques
Original numbered certificate
Original explanatory documentation
Both medal halves are hallmarked on the rim with British sterling silver hallmarks, including the Lion Passant (925 sterling silver), the London Assay Office Leopard's Head, the maker's mark LH (Library of Imperial History) and the 1975 London date letter, confirming the authenticity of this official commemorative edition.
Dimensions
Frame: approximately 40 × 24.5 × 2 cm
Medal diameter: approximately 132 mm
Total weight: approximately 700 grams
We opened the display to examine the medals; they are filled with very lightweight foam. The weight of both medals is approximately 120 grams. The entire assembly is being put back together neatly and professionally.
Condition
Excellent original condition. The silver surfaces remain bright with no visible scratches. The walnut frame, brass plaques, certificate and accompanying documentation are all present. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
A rare opportunity to acquire a complete and numbered official sterling silver edition of one of the most celebrated medals in European history, combining exceptional artistic quality with historical significance and limited production.
Catawiki smart shipping services, insured and well packed.
