This is a Japanese hanging scroll, hand-painted in colour on silk by the artist Shōzan (章山). It depicts a fierce tiger perched upon rocks, roaring with its mouth wide open, with faint ink bamboo leaves in the background. The tiger bears a powerful presence, with finely and vividly rendered stripes.

Executed in the traditional Japanese colour painting technique on silk, with subtle gradations of colour. The running script signature “Shōzan (章山)” appears on the lower right of the painting, with a round red artist’s seal beneath it.

Japanese mounting with resin roller ends. A pair of Japanese stone scroll weights is supplied, fitted with woven knots and long tassels. It presents a dignified appearance when hung, and comes with a Tomobako (共箱) wooden storage box.

Consistent with age, the silk exhibits natural yellowing, minor foxing, creases and accumulated dust. No tears or repairs to the painted surface. Roller ends are intact. Overall condition good for age.
