Val Saint Lambert “Aberdeen” Crystal Vase — Charles Graffart — Art Deco, 1940s

An exceptional Art Deco crystal vase by Val Saint Lambert, dating from the 1940s and designed by Charles Graffart, one of the most important designers associated with the celebrated Belgian crystal manufactory.

Known as the “Aberdeen” model, the vase is documented in the original Val Saint Lambert catalogue as C.G. 735, providing an important period reference confirming its attribution and authenticity. The Aberdeen model was produced with numerous variations of cut decoration, and this example features a particularly elaborate and highly geometric pattern.

Made from high-quality clear crystal, the vase is entirely hand-cut and polished. Its dense decoration combines deep geometric facets, diamond motifs, finely cross-cut panels and large polished cuts around the upper section. The complexity of the cutting creates remarkable brilliance and optical depth, with the crystal catching and refracting light from every angle.

The vase is signed “Val St. Lambert” on the base and corresponds directly to the documented Aberdeen form illustrated in the period catalogue.

Remarkably for a piece approaching a century in age, it remains in very good condition, with no chips or cracks. Only normal light traces of age and use may be present.

A particularly refined example of Belgian Art Deco crystal, combining Charles Graffart’s strong geometric design with the exceptional craftsmanship for which Val Saint Lambert became internationally renowned.


Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.

The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.

The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
