Wurkun Figurines - Wukari Region, Benue Valley, Nigeria
These figurines are characterized by a consistently vertical, almost rod-like design. Their elongated bodies are reduced to oval forms; relief-like arms embrace a recessed abdomen. Ring-shaped transitions divide the neck and lower torso. The heads are particularly expressive, with disc-shaped ears, protruding mouths, and distinctly incised teeth. Tall, comb-like crests accentuate the silhouette. Both figures terminate in long iron spikes, which originally allowed them to be set in the ground. The dark, crusty patina reinforces their archaic character.
Such sculptures are attributed to the Wurkun, a group of diverse communities in the wider Benue region of northeastern Nigeria, and are known as kundul. Comparable works often appear as male-female pairs; the tall crest on the head may identify the male figure. Kundul were crafted on the instructions of ritual specialists and used in healing and protective practices. Through washing, oiling, and offerings, they acquired their characteristic surfaces and ritual efficacy. Given the complex cultural interconnections of the Benue Valley, the precise attribution of this pair to the Wukari region should nevertheless be understood as a statement of provenance.
