Gustav Klimt — Danaé, 1907
Art print based on Gustave Klimt's work titled Danaë
Official print on heavy paper, full-page, borderless
40 x 40 cm
In perfect condition.
With Danaé, Gustav Klimt created one of the most sensual works of his Golden Period.
Inspired by Greek mythology, the painting depicts Danaë, daughter of King Acrisius. According to the myth, her father warned by an oracle that he would one day be killed by his grandson—locked Danaë away so that she could not bear children. Zeus, however, reached her in the form of a shower of gold, and from their union Perseus was born.
Klimt chose not to tell the whole story. He focuses the composition on Danaë, curled up in an almost fetal position, her eyes closed, entirely absorbed in her inner world. Zeus’s golden rain appears as a luminous stream that cuts across the composition and contrasts with the purple, brown, and violet tones that envelop her body.
The painting’s square format and Danaë’s circular pose reinforce the impression of a closed, intimate world. The female figure occupies nearly the entire space, while Klimt’s characteristic decorative motifs gradually blur the boundary between the figure, the fabrics, and the ornamentation.
Created at the height of Klimt’s “Golden Period,” Danaé perfectly illustrates his artistic language: sensuality, symbolism, mythology, and decorative richness blend to transform an ancient episode into a profoundly modern representation of female desire.
P.S.: The frame is not included in the package; only the print will be shipped. Thank you.
