Mithradates VI of Pontos (120–63 BC), known as Mithradates the Great, expanded his kingdom across Anatolia and the Black Sea and became one of Rome’s most persistent adversaries. Championing Greek freedom, he launched the Mithradatic Wars and orchestrated the Asiatic Vespers. After early victories over Sulla and Lucullus, he was defeated by Pompey. Betrayed by his son, he died after poison failed, and is remembered for resisting Rome and developing mithridatium.
