Arados was one of the principal Phoenician city-states, occupying a fortified island off the Syrian coast. Its powerful fleet and strategic position made it important to Mediterranean trade and Persian naval power. The city retained its own kings and coinage under Achaemenid rule, later submitting peacefully to Alexander the Great and continuing to prosper in the Hellenistic period.
