ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONAn exceptional copy of Longus's famous pastoral novel Daphnis et Chloé, published in Paris by Éditions du Bélier in 1945. This In-4 format (28.2 cm x 20 cm) masterpiece features a total of 227 pages bound in a single luxurious volume.The main highlight of this piece is its superb art leather bookbinding signed by master artisan René Kieffer (retaining the original workshop label from 18, Rue Séguier, Paris on the inner cover). The covers boast a fine geometric pattern of blind-stamped checkerboards, beautifully adorned on the front cover with a striking central gilt composition depicting a stylized oil lamp. Smooth spine with bright gold lettering, gilt top edge, and original paper covers preserved inside.This volume is copy No. 251 out of the 700 numbered copies printed on premium vélin pur chiffon de Lana paper, from a total limited edition of 805 copies (which included 21 copies on Auvergne paper with a watercolor, 64 copies on Lana paper with an original drawing, and 20 out-of-commerce copies). Profusely illustrated with 85 original compositions by Louis Touchagues, including 2 beautiful frontispieces and 18 spectacular full-page plates printed in rich colors. Overall condition: Very good. A highly distinguished collector's item for modern French bibliophilia.
