An authentic nomadic çuval from the Gaziantep region of Anatolia.

Çuvals are large transport and storage bags traditionally used by nomadic communities to carry and preserve grain during seasonal migrations. Beyond their practical function, each example bears distinctive woven motifs that reflected the identity and geographical origin of its owner.

Wool-on-wool weaving. The quality of the craftsmanship matches the beauty of the design, while the robust construction reflects the demanding everyday use for which these textiles were originally made.

The colour palette is composed entirely of vegetal dyes, harmoniously balanced and enhanced by the use of white cotton in the motifs, creating subtle yet striking contrasts.

Although belonging to the family of utilitarian textiles, finely woven çuvals are among the most refined and sought-after examples of nomadic domestic weaving.

This example is distinguished by its unusually light-coloured ends, beautifully framed by a broad band of deep indigo blue, giving the composition a particularly elegant and luminous character.
