This piece is an enkolpion, a type of pectoral reliquary that was very popular during the Middle Byzantine period, specifically between the 11th and 13th centuries AD. The central figure depicts the Virgin Mary in an attitude of intercession, with her arms raised in prayer. This posture symbolises her role as a mediator between humanity and the divine. The engraved circle around the figure’s head indicates her holiness and divine nature. The very silhouette of the object was considered a sacred amulet capable of warding off evil and physically protecting the wearer.
Provenance: German private collection acquired on the EU market in the 2000s, purchased at an auction house, 2026, Netherlands
