This traditional ornamental and utility set witnesses the remarkable craftsmanship of nomadic artisans from the Saharan Tuareg culture .
The central component is a travel pouch or satchel known as a khomeissa , crafted from supple openwork leather , hand-embroidered and enhanced with green and red pigments .
It is topped by a large pectoral metal pendant engraved with geometric patterns and adorned with small riveted bosses typical of desert metalwork .
The assembly also integrates a chiseled leather case concealing a small engraved brass container meant to hold traditional kohl eyeliner along with its applicator rod .
The object features an impressive total length of 93 cm and weighs 250 g , suspended by a wide braided leather cord embellished with long leather fringes and tassels .
The time-darkened patina of the leather , the natural fading of the green pigments and the gentle oxidation of the metal surfaces indicate highly authentic manual work dating from the first half or mid-20th century .
