Struck at the Casa da Moeda in Lisbon during the final years of European colonial presence on the subcontinent, these short-lived coins represent the final monetary system of Portuguese India.

Coin Highlights

Composition: Struck in an official copper-nickel alloy.

The 3 Escudo measures approx. 26.5 mm in diameter , while the larger 6 Escudos measures approx.31 mm

This newly minted copper-nickel coinage went into active circulation during the latter half of 1959. However, its window of utility was tragically short-lived. On December 19, 1961, armed Indian forces advanced into Goa under Operation Vijay, resulting in the swift annexation of the territory into the Republic of India. The escudo system was abruptly demonetized on May 15, 1962, and replaced entirely by the Indian Rupee. Because this entire coin family was minted for essentially a single year, finding surviving specimens that completely escaped circulation and preserved their original, radiant mint state is an incredible victory for collectors.
