This coloured woodblock print depicts the streetscape of a historic post town, a classic work created in the early 1990s by contemporary Japanese artist Katsuyuki Nishijima.

Katsuyuki Nishijima is an important second-generation postwar Japanese creative woodblock printmaker. He focuses on old streets, post towns and rural landscapes, using clean blocks and tranquil colours to capture the quiet, timeless atmosphere of buildings and nature.

Using a concise colour woodblock style, the artist depicts the traditional merchant houses of Shirokiya (白木屋) tea house in Tsumago-juku, Nagano. The composition features staggered wooden townhouses, stone-paved lanes and drifting clouds in the blue sky. The lines are simple and crisp with well-defined colour blocks and a calm, soft palette, conveying the peaceful mood of the old post town and embodying the wabi-sabi aesthetic of traditional Japanese architecture.

Along the lower margin are the artist’s pencil signature, red seal, handwritten title “Shirokiya (白木屋)” in pencil, and the limited edition number 148/500 in pencil. This is an original limited-edition woodblock print hand-signed by the artist.

The print comes with a solid wood frame, no glass panel. The frame bears signs of age and handling. Due to age, the paper shows slight toning. Overall good condition for its age.
