Historical Era:
Minted in 1944 during the latter half of World War II. Due to wartime shortages of precious metals and traditional copper, the British Indian government shifted the composition of the 1/2 Anna to nickel-brass.

Designed by the renowned British engraver Percy Metcalfe. The obverse features the crowned left-facing bust of King George VI. The reverse displays a distinct scalloped/quadrangular (square with rounded corners) shape containing a central quatrefoil flower, with the denomination "Two Paisa" (1/2 Anna) written in English and four regional Indian languages (Urdu, Bengali, Telugu, and Devanagari).

Highlights:
1. The unique quadrangular, scalloped shape was engineered for touch-identification by a diverse population. It beautifully unites five different languages on a single planchet, reflecting India's rich cultural tapestry.
2. Nickel-brass is highly prone to tarnishing and corrosion in humid tropical climates. Surviving in NGC MS63 with its original, radiant golden-yellow mint luster fully intact is an extraordinary exception.
3. Minted in 1944, this coin captures the final years of the British Raj before Independence in 1947. It bears the portrait of George VI, the last British monarch to hold the title of Emperor of India (IND: IMP).
