Vintage Japanese railway warning sign from the era of Japanese National Railways (JNR), featuring the Japanese inscription “架線注意” (Kasen Chui), meaning “Caution: Overhead Catenary / Overhead Wires”.

This type of warning was used in Japanese railway environments to alert railway personnel to the danger posed by overhead electrical wires. “架線注意” warnings became particularly important as railway electrification expanded throughout Japan during the Showa period.

The sign has a highly distinctive industrial railway design, with large red Japanese characters on a white background surrounded by diagonal black-and-yellow warning stripes. The strong contrasting colours were intended to make the warning immediately noticeable in a railway working environment.

The plate has four mounting holes, one near each corner, indicating that it was intended to be securely fixed to railway equipment or infrastructure.

The reverse is painted blue and shows substantial age-related oxidation and surface wear.

This sign is believed to date from the Japanese National Railways (JNR) period, probably around the 1960s–1980s. However, as there is no visible manufacturing date or maker’s mark, the exact year cannot be confirmed.

Japanese National Railways was Japan’s state-owned railway organisation before the railway system was reorganised into the JR Group in 1987.

Unlike reproduction railway décor, this is an old railway-related item showing genuine signs of long-term use and ageing. The scratches, paint wear, oxidation and rust give the piece a strong authentic industrial character.

The compact size also makes it particularly suitable for displaying in a railway collection, industrial interior, garage, study or display cabinet.
