卖家的描述
Original Soviet sculptural portrait of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, created by Soviet sculptor Yu. Kolesnikov and clearly dated 1971 directly on the sculpture.
This is a particularly interesting example of Soviet commemorative sculpture, distinguished not only by its expressive composition but also by the unusually complete original markings preserved on the reverse:
“КОЛЕСНИКОВ 1971”
“Ц. 7-50”
The first inscription identifies the sculptor and dates the work to 1971. The second is the original Soviet retail price marking — 7 rubles 50 kopecks — an important period detail that helps document the sculpture as an original commercially distributed Soviet-era object.
What makes this sculpture especially striking is its dynamic and highly sculptural composition. Instead of the conventional static frontal image of Lenin, his head is turned decisively to the side, while the broad sweeping forms of the coat and shoulders create a sense of movement and monumentality.
Despite its relatively compact size, the sculpture has the visual presence of a much larger monument. From different angles the composition changes noticeably: the strong portrait profile dominates from the front and side, while the broad forms behind the shoulders create an almost architectural silhouette. This makes the piece considerably more visually engaging than many standard Soviet Lenin busts.
The sculpture is executed in cast metal with a dark bronze-coloured patinated surface and mounted on a separate polished dark marbled base. The exact alloy has not been laboratory tested, so the material is deliberately described conservatively rather than being identified as bronze without proof.
Another interesting aspect is the documented connection between Yu. Kolesnikov and official Soviet Lenin imagery. Soviet postal issues from 1970, produced for the centenary of Lenin’s birth, identify a Lenin sculpture by Y. Kolesnikov, confirming that Kolesnikov was an officially recognised sculptor of Lenin imagery during this period. This historical reference supports the attribution and context of the artist, although it should not be interpreted as proof that the exact sculpture depicted on the stamp is this particular tabletop model.
The sculpture retains a strong and authentic vintage character. The original dark patinated surface shows age-related oxidation, spotting, rubbing, small marks and natural wear accumulated over decades. These traces have not been polished away or artificially concealed.
The base also shows signs of age and use, including scratches and surface wear, particularly on the underside. The condition is clearly documented in the photographs.
The combination of:
identified sculptor Yu. Kolesnikov
exact 1971 dating
original Soviet retail price Ц.7-50
distinctive dynamic composition
original aged patinated surface
substantial polished marbled base
makes this a particularly appealing example of Soviet political and commemorative sculpture from the Cold War period.
A strong collector’s object for collections of Soviet Memorabilia, Leniniana, USSR Sculpture, Soviet Political Art, Cold War History and 20th-century Communist-era art.
