2 Antique Japanese Soroban Abacuses – 伊藤尚文堂 & 金竜モスリン 津田産業 – Meiji–Showa Era
Item Description
A fascinating set of two antique Japanese soroban (traditional abacuses), believed to date from around the Meiji–Taisho periods to the early Showa period.
These are not modern reproductions, but practical calculating tools that appear to have been genuinely used over many years. Their wooden frames and beads have developed a warm, aged patina, giving them considerable character and a strong sense of history.
Both soroban bear inscriptions that appear to relate to their original manufacturers, retailers, or businesses.
The shorter soroban is marked 「伊藤尚文堂」 (Ito Shobundo / Ito Shobundō), possibly the name of a shop or business.
The longer soroban bears the inscription 「金竜モスリン 津田産業 ルーキーモスリン」, apparently associated with muslin/textile-related trade or advertising. There are also traces of handwritten markings, further reflecting its history as an object that was actually used.
The two examples differ in length, bead arrangement, coloration, and degree of patina, making them particularly interesting as a comparative pair. They would make attractive display pieces for collectors of Japanese antiques, historical calculating instruments, old commercial objects, or traditional wooden implements.
As shown in the many detailed photographs, there are age-related scratches, rubbing, discoloration, wear, stains, marks, and other signs of long-term use. Such imperfections are part of the authentic character and charm of these antique objects. Please examine the photographs carefully for the condition and details.
