Set of 2 Vintage Japanese Maekake Advertising Work Aprons – Matsuo Sake & Sanshu – Showa Period – Japan

A distinctive set of two vintage Japanese maekake, traditional Japanese work aprons featuring bold commercial advertising designs.

Maekake were traditionally worn by merchants, craftsmen, shop workers, brewery workers and other tradespeople in Japan. Their durable construction and striking company logos and lettering have made vintage examples increasingly interesting as pieces of Japanese commercial, textile and folk culture.

This lot contains two different vintage advertising maekake.

1. “元祖 三州釜吹元” / Ashihara Kanamono Co., Ltd.

A vintage Japanese advertising maekake featuring the inscription:

“元祖 三州釜吹元”

and:

“特約店 芦原金物株式会社”
(Authorized Dealer: Ashihara Kanamono Co., Ltd.)

The design features a particularly striking large circular emblem containing the Japanese character “大”, together with traditional Japanese commercial lettering.

Additional address and telephone information for the Osaka business appears toward the bottom.

2. “松尾 / Matsuo” Sake Advertising Maekake

A vintage Japanese sake advertising maekake prominently featuring the large characters:

“松尾” (Matsuo)

together with the inscription:

“優等清酒” (Superior Sake)

The lower part bears the name associated with Takahashi Sukesaku Shuzoten (高橋助作酒造店).

“Matsuo” is a Japanese sake brand produced by Takahashi Sukesaku Shuzoten in Nagano Prefecture, a historic sake brewery founded in 1875.

The bold calligraphic lettering and traditional advertising layout give this piece a particularly attractive and authentic Japanese appearance.
