Sunset Boulevard (in Spain, *El crepúsculo de los dioses*; in Argentina, Mexico, and Uruguay, *El ocaso de una vida*; in Argentina, also *El ocaso de una estrella*), also abbreviated as *Sunset Blvd.*, is an American film noir released in 1950, produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by Billy Wilder, who also co-wrote the screenplay, and produced and co-written by Charles Brackett. The music was composed by Franz Waxman.

The original title refers to the famous avenue that runs through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

The film tells the story of a former silent-film star, Norma Desmond (played by Gloria Swanson), who, unable to accept that her glory days are over, dreams of a triumphant return to the big screen, for which she hopes to enlist the help of Joe Gillis (William Holden), a screenwriter whom she makes her lover. Other notable cast members include Erich von Stroheim as the star’s butler and Nancy Olson as a screenwriter and Gillis’s assistant. Several prominent Hollywood figures make cameo appearances in the film, including director Cecil B. DeMille and three silent-film celebrities: Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner, and Anna Q. Nilsson.

Upon its release, *Sunset Boulevard* received widespread critical acclaim. It was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, though it won only three. Today it is considered a classic and is often cited as one of the most significant works in American cinema. In 1989, it was included in the first selection of American films deemed worthy of preservation by the National Film Registry. On the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American films, released in 1998, it ranked twelfth, although in a more recent edition of that list, from 2007, it has dropped to sixteenth.
