卖家的描述
Guro Fly Whip - Gohitafla Region, Côte d’Ivoire, incl stand.
This elongated fly whisk combines wood carving and fiberwork into an elegant, vertical composition. A stylized zoomorphic head with a long, extended mouth, large, disc-shaped ears, and prominently sculpted eyes crowns the handle. Chip carvings accentuate the forehead and shoulders. Below, the handle is densely wrapped with leather or fiber bands; a substantial bundle of long, fine plant or animal fibers hangs from its lower end. The dark brown, in places glossy, patina and the worn bindings lend the object a distinct sense of wear and tear.
The attribution leads to the Guro people of central-western Côte d’Ivoire, specifically to the Gohitafla region, which is known for its significant woodcarving tradition; around 1900, researchers even identified a so-called “Master of Gohitafla” there. Fly whisks were not merely utilitarian objects in various societies of Côte d’Ivoire, but could also serve as prestige and ceremonial items. The term “fetish fly whisk” should nevertheless be used with caution in the case of this particular piece: a specific magical-religious function cannot be definitively deduced from its form and material alone. However, the zoomorphic head likely lent the object a representative significance that extended beyond its purely functional purpose.
Literature (selection):
Eberhard Fischer / Lorenz Homberger: The Art of the Guro, Ivory Coast. Zurich 1985.
Anne-Marie Bouttiaux: Guro. Milan 2016.
Fischer / Homberger et al.: African Masters. Art of the Ivory Coast. Zurich 2014.
