Jukun Figurine Pair - Wukari, Nigeria
The nearly identical pair of figurines is carved from dark wood and characterized by a powerful, slightly stooped posture. Long torsos, strong legs, and hands clasped in front of the lower body create a closed silhouette. The large heads feature round eyes, protruding noses, and open, toothed mouths; beard-like extensions enhance their expressive effect. Particularly striking are the tall headdresses made of bundled feathers or plant fibers, attached to the crown with cords and remnants of red textile. Abrasion, cracks, and earthy deposits give the surfaces a pronounced patina of use.
The attribution leads to the Jukun cultural region of the middle and upper Benue, whose important historical center is Wukari in present-day Taraba State. Jukun sculptures are relatively rare and by no means uniform in their functions; documented figures exist in healing and spirit cults, as well as works used in ceremonial and communal contexts. The striking headdresses and the paired design of this ensemble suggest a performative or ritual context, but do not allow for a definitive identification as ancestral or spirit figures. Wukari is located in Taraba State; Nasarawa lies within the wider area inhabited by Jukun-speaking groups.
Literature (selection):
C. K. Meek: A Sudanese Kingdom. London 1931.
Arnold Rubin: The Arts of the Jukun-Speaking Peoples of Northern Nigeria. 1969.
Berns / Fardon / Kasfir (eds.): Central Nigeria Unmasked. Los Angeles 2011.
