Kyzikos, a prosperous Greek city in Mysia on the Propontis, controlled trade between the Aegean, Black Sea, and Anatolia. Its electrum staters, or Kyzikenoi, circulated widely across the eastern Mediterranean. Influenced by Persia, Athens, Alexander the Great, and Rome, it was the site of Athens’ victory over Sparta in 410 BC. The city later declined as disasters and changing trade routes reduced its importance.
