Kebren was an ancient city in the Skamander valley of the Troad, near Mount Ida, where Aeolian Greeks lived alongside an Anatolian population. Its earliest silver coins appeared in the late sixth century BC, with the ram’s head becoming its characteristic emblem. This hemidrachm belongs to that early monetary tradition. Kebren later paid tribute to Athens through the Delian League, before passing between Persian and Spartan control.
