Antiochos II Theos succeeded his father in 261 BC and fought Ptolemaic Egypt for control of the eastern Mediterranean. The people of Miletos honoured him as Theos, “God”, after he freed their city from the tyrant Timarchos. Peace with Egypt was sealed by his marriage to Berenike, daughter of Ptolemy II. After his death in 246 BC, rival claims involving her son and the sons of his earlier wife Laodike plunged the dynasty into a succession crisis and renewed war.
