Zoomorphic Nok Terracotta - Kaduna Region, Nigeria, incl stand.
This small terracotta sculpture depicts a stocky, quadrupedal animal of almost archaic proportions. Its compact body rests on short, sturdy legs; the slightly lowered head merges almost seamlessly into the torso, lacking a distinct neck. A prominent forehead or horns and the short, projecting muzzle define the profile, though they do not allow for definitive zoological identification. The coarse-grained, orange to reddish-brown surface shows signs of wear, mineral inclusions, and traces of soil. Decorative details are largely absent, giving the sculpture's mass and silhouette a powerful presence.
This work is attributed to the Nok terracotta tradition of central Nigeria, particularly the present-day state of Kaduna. In addition to the famous anthropomorphic figures, the Nok repertoire also includes zoomorphic representations. Recent archaeological research dates the true heyday of figurative terracotta production primarily to the period from approximately 900 to 400 BCE. Excavations indicate a connection between terracotta deposition and burial practices and recurring rituals; however, the specific meaning of individual animal figures remains unclear. Without a confirmed excavation context, neither the animal species nor the function of this particular piece should be definitively determined.

Legal Framework
Under the 1970 UNESCO Convention in combination with the Kulturgutschutz Gesetz (KGSG) any claim for the restitution of cultural property becomes time-barred three years after the competent authorities of the State of origin obtain knowledge of the object’s location and the identity of its possessor.
All bronzes and terracotta items offered have been publicly exhibited in Wolfgang Jaenicke Gallery since 2001. Organisations such as DIGITAL BENIN and academic institutions such as the Technical University of Berlin, which have been intensively involved in restitution-reseaches (translocation-project) over the past seven years, are aware of our work, have inspected large parts of our collection and have visited us in our dependance in Lomé, Togo, among other places, to learn about the international Art trade on site. Furthermore, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in Abuja, Nigeria, has been informed about our collection. In no case in the past have there been restitution claims against private institutions such as the Wolfgang Jaenicke Gallery
