Tsugaru lacquerware (Tsugaru-nuri) is a traditional lacquerware craft from the Tsugaru region, centered around Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost lacquerware production area in Japan. With origins dating back to the Genroku era of the Edo period, it boasts a history of over 300 years.

Tsugaru lacquerware is characterized by four representative techniques, and among the various lacquer techniques, it is best known for the 'togi-dashi kawari-nuri' (polishing and changing coatings) method. This meticulous process, involving the application and polishing of multiple layers, requires more than 40 steps and takes over two months to complete. Renowned for its exceptional durability, Tsugaru lacquerware is often described as 'robust.'

This tea caddy (natsume), an essential tool in the Japanese tea ceremony, showcases the intricate 'kinmushi kuinuri' (gold-eaten lacquer technique). The unique pattern is created by applying gold leaf to a textured base, followed by multiple layers of lacquer. The final polishing process reveals the elaborate and organic design, making each piece one-of-a-kind.
